IO Interactive's Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is now official, as the Square Enix Europe studio has declared it a 2010 release. The new game takes place in Shanghai, China where IO will introduce a new "visual experience" to the franchise. Apparently in line with the two pieces of grainy security-cam footage that've been released of the game so far, IO's new approach was inspired by documentary filmmaking and YouTube-era user-generated video.

IO's general manager Niels Jorgensen says fans should look forward to having their feedback from the first game addressed in the sequel, and to be prepared for a "shock" when the actual game is shown.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC sometime next year.

Tyler says: The greatest thing Alfred Hitchcock ever did was what he didn't do: show you the scary stuff. The scariest parts of Hitchcock's works were what you imagined. Likewise, when I see some horrific video from a security camera, though most of the detail in the video is grainy at best, my mind fills in the blanks with what's possibly a grimmer scenario than the one actually captured. Which is what I imagine IO is going for here.

Think about how real the AC130 stage in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare felt. Though all you saw was a fuzzy black-and-white screen with tiny dudes crossing fields to find cover, it was much more in line with what us civilians have seen of war on the news. If the game looks anything like the image above, I'd have to admit that my interest in the game just got a +1. Then again, I'm the kinda guy who loved "Cloverfield" because you couldn't see what the hell was going on. Am I alone? Anyone else digging the possibilities here?
