Dog Stinkhorn, Mutinus caninus

Dog Stinkhorn, Mutinus caninus

Observation - Dog Stinkhorn, Mutinus caninus - UK and Ireland. Description: Members of the local fungi made an exciting find today, Mutinus caninus aka Dog Stinkhorn Mushrooms

Members of the local fungi made an exciting find today, Mutinus caninus aka Dog Stinkhorn Mushrooms in various stages of development. They initially appear as a white ‘egg’ in the soil usually covered by leaf litter. The ‘egg’ ruptures and the thin polystyrene-like stipe emerges. The tip is covered in gleba, it’s smelly, slimy spore bearing material. A blue bottle attracted by the smell, landed on the tip and, in turn, will help the mushroom to spread it’s spores.
