The PPF communicates with the foramen lacerum via the Vidian canal (Fig. 2c), which traverses posterolaterally through the body of the sphenoid bone. The Vidian canal contains the Vidian nerve, which carries parasympathatic preganglionic fibres from the facial nerve to the PPG.
