Renal cell carcinoma

Also called: hypernephroma
A type of kidney cancer that starts in the lining of small tubes in the kidney.
  • Treatable by a medical professional
  • Requires a medical diagnosis
  • Lab tests or imaging always required
Renal cell carcinoma is most common in older men. Risk factors include cigarette smoking and obesity.
Many cases of renal cell carcinoma are symptomless until the conditon is advanced. When symptoms do occur, they include flank pain, blood in the urine, or a lump in the abdomen.
Treatment may include removing the entire kidney or its affected part. It may also include destroying the tumor with radiowaves or by freezing it. If the carcinoma has spread beyond the kidneys, options include immunotherapy, molecularly targeted therapies, or localized radiation therapy.
Rare: Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year
