De Quervain (dih-kwer-VAIN) syndrome is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Repetitive hand or wrist movements can make the condition worse.
Symptoms include pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, and a "sticking" or "stop-and-go" sensation in the thumb when moving it.
Treatment may include pain relief medicines, physical or occupational therapy, or surgery. Treatment is generally successful when started early.

What causes de Quervain's tenosynovitis?
De Quervain's tenosynovitis is common and may be caused by overuse of the thumb and wrist. It also is associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding. People with rheumatoid arthritis may be more susceptible to De Quervain's tenosynovitis. It is most common in people in their 40s and 50s and affects more women than men.
What is the best treatment for tenosynovitis?
Conservative therapy with NSAIDs and splinting is the first line for non-infectious tenosynovitis and is often highly effective. Further treatment with steroid injections, DMARDs, and surgery may be warranted. Non-infectious tenosynovitis has many causes which may necessitate different treatment modalities.
