Sneak peek at what's coming up on HBO in 2017

Sky has released the first photos from the upcoming show, and judging by the images it could be the perfect antidote for those suffering from Game of Thrones withdrawal symptoms.

Britannia is set in ancient England in 43AD at the time of the Roman invasion, when the country was spilt into tribes and immersed in mysticism.

The 10-part drama will follow a Celtic princess Kerra - who is daughter to the King of Cantii, Pellenor - as the Romans launch a takeover on Britannia.

Kerra is initially is at odds with her family due to her fearless and headstrong nature, however, once the Romans attack Britannia, Kerra will be forced to choose between her own feelings, her tribal duties, and the will of the all-powerful druids.

The 10-part series has been written by playwright Jez Butterworth, who wrote Jerusalem and films Black Mass and James Bond block buster Spectre.

Britannia stars The Walking Dead and The Missing’s David Morrissey as Aulus, the head of the invading Roman Imperial Army, while Kelly Reilly from True Detective will portray Kerra.

Britannia is an epic drama set in 43AD as the Roman Imperial Army

Britannia synopsis

The Killing’s Nikolaj Lie Kaas plays the role of Divis, who is described in the synopsis as a “rogue druid caught between his own need to stop the Romans and realising he is part of a much bigger plan”.

There have also been hints that Britannia will feature a supernatural element with the ambiguity over whether the druids have powers unlike others.

The official plot synopsis reads: “Britannia is an epic drama set in 43AD as the Roman Imperial Army – determined and terrified in equal measure - returns to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia - a mysterious land ruled by warrior women and powerful druids who can channel the powerful forces of the underworld. Or so they say.”
