Pokemon GO, Discord, Ingress and other apps went offline in random areas around the world

Something weird is happening with Pokemon GO, Discord and many other apps as we’re writing this. Apparently, Google Cloud is experiencing technical issues and it’s affecting a number of apps around the world. We’ll keep this post updated.

Timeline of key events:

19:48 UTC – players are reporting that the service is back online! Rejoice readers!

19:47 UTC – screenshot of Discord’s status page:

19:46 UTC – Google publishes an update, commits to provide more information soon: “We’ve received a report of an issue with Google App Engine as of Tuesday, 2018-07-17 12:26 US/Pacific. We will provide more information by Tuesday, 2018-07-17 13:00 US/Pacific.”

19:43 UTC – Niantic, Discord, Social Blade and Rocket League support accounts have confirmed that the issues are connected to Google Cloud outage. No ETA given at the moment.

19:41 UTC – Google’s Cloud team is aware of the issue and is working on it. Issue link is here: https://status.cloud.google.com/incident/cloud-networking/18012.

19:37 UTC – Google’s Cloud status dashboard starts reporting affected services correctly: Google App Engine, Google Cloud Networking and Google Stack Driver are affected! Pokemon GO’s backend runs on Google App Engine in part.

19:36 UTC – ispokemongodownornot.com reports record low service availability, plummeting to critical status for the first time in months

19:33 UTC – Snapchat, Discord, Rocket League, Spotify, Pokemon Go, Ingress, Social Blade are all affected. Google Cloud’s status dashboard reports no issues, but their public website is also not available.

19:29 UTC – Social Blade (a famous social metrics website) reports that they’re offline as well, hinting at an issue with Google Cloud’s Load Balancer and that it’s affecting many other sites and apps

19:25 UTC – Game is coming back for some folks

19:18 UTC – Game servers go down, players are unable to login via Google login

19:17 UTC – Discord is down.
