Elizabeth Hurley revealed that working with Matthew Perry in the midst of his battle with drug and alcohol addiction in the early aughts was no walk in the park for everyone involved.

The actor was asked about starring opposite Perry in the 2002 rom-com Serving Sara during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment on Wednesday, during which she shared that while she does have “very fond memories” of Perry, “To be honest, it was a nightmare working with him at that time and, as it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction.” She added, “We were in a force majeure and had to all sit at home twiddling our thumbs for some time.”

In Perry's new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, he writes about starring in that film and how his addiction halted production after he had to be sent to rehab in the midst of shooting. In the book, the Friends star says that both Hurley and their director Reginald Hudlin were both understandably “pissed off” about the situation. Hurley told the outlet that while “that was a little tough,” when Perry returned to set “he was fabulous,” even though he had to “re-voice everything that we shot before” his two-month stay in rehab. In his memoir, Perry explains that the reason he had to re-record all of that dialogue is because of how badly he was slurring his words when they actually filmed the scenes. He wrote, “Of course, the movie tanked anyway. I was paid $3.5 million to do the movie and I got sued for the shutdown, even though it was a health issue. At the mediation table a team of insurance flacks faced me down, so I just wrote them a check for $650,000.”

Hurley went on to say that, “It was tough, obviously he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with. But you could see he was suffering for sure.” The actor added that she hasn’t “actually read the book yet,” but she has read a few of the excerpts from Perry's memoir and thought it was “quite interesting.” She added, “He’s a very funny writer like he’s a very funny man. He’s an incredibly gifted comedian…his way with words is fantastic.”

Last month, Perry revealed in an interview with People that with this book he “wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again. I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober—and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction—to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
