Dinner and a Movie: 'X:Men Origins: Wolverine' and lobsters

Germain Lussier
Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar: the fierce fighting machine Wolverine, who possesses amazing healing powers, adamantium claws, and a primal fury known as berserker rage in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

When people think of Wolverine, they immediately think of his claws.

Three razor-sharp blades made from a fictional metal called adamantium extend from between his knuckles to create some of the most vicious weapons possible. They then retract and heal because he has the ability to heal from anything.

Yes, Wolverine and his abilities are surely straight out of comic book lore, but that's what makes him so entertaining. So after three "X-Men" films, it makes perfect sense he's the first character to receive his own film.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" stars Hugh Jackman as the clawed mutant who can't be hurt. The film takes some liberties with the actual comic book origins of the character and surmises that Wolverine, who goes by the name Logan, is a near-immortal being who has been fighting alongside his brother Victor (aka Sabertooth, played by Liev Schreiber) through a century's worth of wars. After an unsuccessful execution attempt, the brothers are recruited to a team of mutants. Logan soon deserts the team, though, beginning his transition to the terrifying Wolverine.

Fans of comic book movies — not comic books — will find plenty on which to latch with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." The fights are entertaining, some of the characters are cool and there are a few twists to keep the story moving.

But fans of the comic and everyone else will probably find the movie quite boring for long stretches and nearly incomprehensible. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" isn't a terrible movie, but by removing the mystery that makes Wolverine so popular, it teeters on that brink.

Those downsides don't matter to the moviegoing public, though, who love a good mindless action film. And since the movie is so obsessed with claws, eat dinner at one of these places that serve lobster.

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds Rated: PG-13 for intense sequences of action, violence and some partial nudity
