Facing off against defending national champions is never an easy feat, especially in the clutch minutes. But Sunday afternoon the No. 19 Georgetown Hoyas traveled to Arlotta Stadium and did just that when they defeated top-ranked Notre Dame, 11-10, in an overtime showdown.
Coming off its first win of the season, the Georgetown (2-2, Big East) men’s lacrosse team battled it out with the Fighting Irish (2-1) until Aidan Carroll scored the sudden-death winner and sealed a huge upset for the Hoyas.

TJ Haley tied the game early in the fourth quarter at 7-7 for Georgetown. With 00:39 seconds left, Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh ran down the field and scored the Irish’s seventh goal of the half, tying the game 10-10 and sending it into extra minutes.

Georgetown’s Chase Llewellyn scored a pair of goals in the first half with Graham Bundy Jr. and Alexander Vardaro grabbing one as well. By halftime, the Hoyas were leading Notre Dame 4-3.
Sunday’s win initiates a two-game win streak early in the season for Georgetown. It also marks the team’s first win over a No. 1 ranked team since 2008.
For the past two seasons, both teams won on each other’s home fields — and it’s looking like history is on track to repeat itself this year.
Up next, the Hoyas will move on to host Brown University at Cooper Field next Saturday, March 2. Meanwhile, Notre Dame will return to Arlotta Stadium to host No. 4 Maryland next Sunday, March 3.
