NEILLSVILLE - A Clark County man who had avoided jail time for having sex with a donkey is now going to jail, and that’s exactly what he wants.

Gavel and scales

Gideon D. Swartzentruber, 21, of Neillsville, was convicted in November of one misdemeanor count of sexual gratification with an animal.

Swartzentruber admitted to police he had initiated a brief sexual encounter with a female donkey in a Neillsville barn in September, according to court records. He told investigators his “privates were out of control” and that he “got crazy and carried away,” according to a police report.

The donkey's owner caught Swartzentruber with the donkey, and he was charged in September. He pleaded guilty.

Swartzentruber faced nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine, but instead, he was sentenced this fall to one year of probation, counseling and a $443 fine.

On Wednesday, however, Swartzentruber was back in court, where he asked a judge to revoke that sentence and put him in jail, according to online court records.

Clark County Circuit Judge Jon Counsell obliged, and he ordered Swartzentruber to serve 30 days in jail.

Why Swartzentruber asked for the jail time is not clear. He represented himself in court and has gone without an attorney since being charged, court records show.

Clark County Assistant District Attorney Kerra Stumbris, who prosecuted the case, told News-Herald Media that Swartzentruber did not say in open court why he asked for jail time.

Swartzentruber must report to jail by Monday, but he will be allowed to leave for work.
