1moI would not trust the Afghanistan opium poppy cultivation figures under the current conditions and regime in Afghanistan. There is no way to estimate the total opium poppy cultivation by using sampling approach given than opium poppy is cultivated in remote areas. Also, the taliban regime knows the location of sample data collection blocs used by the UNODC. The taliban regime can easily remove opium poppy in these areas before UNODC collects satellite imagery. Therefore 2023 and upcoming 2024 results cant be reliable. The only way of understanding the total opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan is full satellite coverage of the country . I do this by using goggle earth engine technology. There were at least 150,000 hectares opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan in 2023. Otherwise, the heroin price could be extremely high in European and other main markets. Also, total cereal cultivation could be sharly increased in Afghanistan in 2023. But these are not the case at all!
