Hong Kong- and Holland-based Fortissimo Films has picked up global sales rights — excluding Benelux — to The Chocolate Case, a documentary that explores child slavery in the chocolate industry.
Directed by Holland’s Benthe Forrer, the film follows three journalists who try to persuade large corporations to end the use of child labor in the chocolate industry. Rebuffed by the industry, they develop the world’s first “slave-free” chocolate bar called Tony’s Chocolonely, which becomes a best-seller in Holland.
The film also features Forrer’s producing partner and husband, filmmaker Maurice Dekkers (Ants on a Shrimp). The pair co-owns Dutch production company Dahl TV, which specializes in investigative, food-related journalistic programs.
The deal was finalized by Fortissimo Film’s Nelleke Driessen in her final acquisition prior to exiting her post as managing director.
“The Chocolate Case is an important and fascinating film that will appeal to various audiences; those who are fans of documentaries, food related films and those looking for socially relevant films,” said Driessen, adding, “Changing the world one chocolate bar at a time really describes what this film is about and shows that we can still do something if we set our minds to it.”
The Chocolate Case was released in the Netherlands in April. It is expected to make its international premiere at a high-profile film festival later this year.
