Buying a new car is a big deal, one that can often overwhelm many. Here, our list to make the process easier and more fun!

Best Sedans

As we’re featuring family-friendly autos, four doors is likely a basic starting point (sorry, adorable coupe or convertible!):

Best Crossovers and SUVs

The biggest benefit of these vehicles is they tend to offer more passenger space and higher ground clearance, but in some cases, you compromise cargo space. Those with a third row offer the most seating capacity, which larger families really appreciate.

More Great Family Cars

This year, to make shopping and comparison easier, we've enhanced our roundup by adding key specs like mileage, maximum occupants, trim (which refers to the configuration package; each trim has different features, and higher trims offer more equipment) and length (especially important if you parallel park regularly). To learn more details about our testing process scroll down below our picks.

Best Subcompact Car

2022 Hyundai Accent

best new family cars 2022
hyundaiusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 33/41/36 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: SE, SEL, Limited
  • Length: 172.6 inches

This stylish, budget-conscious four-door subcompact sedan is great for a young professional or couple in the city. It offers impressive fuel economy, class-leading warranty coverage at 10 years or 100,000 miles, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat for all trims.

As one would expect with a subcompact, you trade rear-seat and trunk space for a more agile size, but the Accent is still a quiet and comfy ride for passengers.

Lab Results: Our experts are fans of the contemporary, dignified exterior and simple interior. Since the Accent is so wallet-friendly, we say upgrade to at least the SEL package to unlock Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity on a larger 7" touchscreen.

Our fave feature: the optional hands-free smart trunk release that activates if you stand behind the car for three seconds with the key in proximity (e.g., purse, pocket, hand). C/D Senior Editor and judge Drew Dorian sums it up perfectly: “Whether it’s serving as someone’s first car or as a spare set of wheels to cart the kids around town, the Accent is a budget-friendly option that forgoes the overwrought styling that’s all too common with cheap small cars.”

2022 Hyundai Accent, from $16,645 (base price)

Best Entry Luxury Car

2022 Cadillac CT4

best new family cars 2022
cadillac
  • Miles Per Gallon: 20/29/23 mpg (city/highway/combined as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, CT4-V, CT4-V Blackwing
  • Length: 187.2 inches

The entry-level Cadillac subcompact doesn't disappoint in its sleek styling and confident handling, making this sport vehicle ideal for those keen on luxury, but with a tighter budget. We're pleased that even the base Luxury model incorporates more standard driver assistance technology, including lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking, as well as convenience features like wireless charging for your phone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and 12-way power-adjustable front seats.

Similar to other vehicles of this size, you sacrifice back-seat spaciousness and cargo space for its diminutive overall size. And we wish the interior materials matched the elevated exterior and driving experience.

Lab Results: In test drives, the CT4 was found to offer sporty acceleration and deft handling. With rear-wheel drive standard (all-wheel drive is available), it sets itself apart from rivals in the category.

Our pros were thrilled Cadillac's sophisticated Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, designed to allow hands-free driving on compatible highways, is now available starting on the Premium Luxury trim.

Best Compact Car

2022 Honda Civic

best new family cars 2022
Honda
  • Miles Per Gallon: 31/40/35 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: LX, Sport, EX, Touring, Si
  • Length: 183.3 inches

Honda's compact sedan got a major facelift for the 2022 model year, and its modern exterior and sleek interior make it optimal for those looking for a fun, reliable vehicle. Happily, the more upscale exterior and refined interior are met with the well-balanced handling expected from this popular vehicle, as it continues to deliver a balance of affordability, reliability and efficiency.

It’s hard to find fault with this sedan, though we do wish road noise was dampened and lumbar support was improved for the driver.

Lab Results: Our tech experts were pleased by the larger touchscreen infotainment system (standard 7”, available 9”) and improved driver safety technology features. Ample tech — including emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and rear-seat reminders — is standard. Controls are large and intuitive, making adjustments to entertainment and temperature easy.

In test drives, the compact car provided not only an engaging driving experience thanks to its spry handling, but a comfy and surprisingly spacious interior for the driver and passengers. Car seat installation was easy, and the setup allowed for versatile configurations. And for those needing more cargo space, you can opt for the hatchback variant.

2022 Honda Civic, from $27,300 (base price)

Best Luxury Compact Car

2022 Genesis G70

best new family cars 2022
genesis
  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/31/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: 2.0T, 3.3T and 3.3T Launch Edition
  • Length: 184.4 inches

This sporty sedan is an ideal pick for someone looking for something decidedly luxurious yet still a great value. Taking an already attractive vehicle with an impressive build quality, the refreshed redesign for 2022 offers updated styling and improved infotainment offerings, including a 10.3” touchscreen and updated software.

Rear passengers will be a bit cramped with legroom and cargo space that is subpar for the segment, but the overall sentiment from all of our testing was luxury at a value price point.

Lab Results: Like other Genesis vehicles, an abundance of comfort and tech features is included standard, which gives Genesis an advantage over the competition. Our experts noted features that help mitigate collisions, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and emergency braking. Drivers and passengers can take comfort in the fact that it was selected as a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), a rigorous safety recognition in the auto industry for crash tests and automatic braking.

Our pros found the ride to be enjoyable, with well-balanced, composed road-handling and sharp steering. The various modes let you determine more precisely the G70’s on-road demeanor, such as Comfort mode for daily driving and Sport/Sport+ for a more enthusiast ride. With strong powertrain options, all trims offered controlled, refined rides. You have a choice of a capable turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 engine for a more powerful punch at higher trims. While the manual transmission was discontinued, both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are still offered.

2022 Genesis G70, from $37,525 (base price)

Best Sedan

2022 Honda Accord

best new family cars 2022
Honda
  • Miles Per Gallon: 30/38/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: LX, Hybrid, Sport, Sport SE, EX-L, Touring
  • Length: 196.1 inches

The 2022 Accord sedan is a practical and modern vehicle for a family looking for comfort and convenience but not willing to sacrifice a fun driving experience. A frequent winner in our Best New Family Car awards, the Accord continues to offer balanced and confident handling regardless of its powertrains.

An abundance of Honda Sensing features is standard as part of the base package, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. If you're looking for accurate steering, the Accord will deliver.

Lab Results: We've driven configurations with both the 192-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and the 242-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and found both capable of providing powerful acceleration and fuel efficiency. And then there's the even more efficient hybrid model that has likewise earned a spot on our best hybrid vehicles list. Beyond the responsive engine and transmission, the ride is quiet and comfortable for driver and passengers alike.

Our tech assessment turned up high marks for the infotainment system, notably the clean and simple layout, making it intuitive to access desired functions. This mid-size sedan offers ample, segment-leading cargo space (nearly 17 cubic feet) and a surprisingly spacious back seat.

2022 Honda Accord, from $25,470 (base price)

Best Luxury Sedan

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

best new family cars 2022
mbusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 23/31(city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats sedan, four in coupe and cabriolet
  • Available Trims: E350, E450 sedan, E450 coupe, E450 cabriolet
  • Length: 194.3 inches

This luxury car delivers elegance befitting someone looking for a head-turning ride with a lavishly appointed interior. In a competitive segment, it stands out thanks to its combination of interior comfort, driving characteristics and performance capabilities.

The E-class is available in a wide range of powertrains and styles, meaning there's something for everyone. All deliver composed handling and smoothness over bumpy roads; the E350 has a turbocharged four-cylinder, and the E450 steps it up to a turbocharged six-cylinder. You can opt for a sedan, coupe or convertible.

Lab Results: The vehicle feels luxe as even the base model includes features usually reserved for higher trims such as a 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital gauge display. Interior ambient lighting is also standard — it offers extra style and can help reduce driver fatigue.

While none have notably large trunks, the convertible has the most diminutive cargo space with us being able to fit only two carry-on suitcases in tests. The E-class is more focused on passenger comfort: The vehicle itself provided next-level comfort with one tester exclaiming, "It's hands down the most comfortable seat I've experienced."

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, from $54,950 (base price)

Best Full-size Sedan

2022 Nissan Maxima

best new family cars 2022
nissanusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 20/30/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: SV, SR, Platinum
  • Length: 192.8 inches

The full-size Maxima sedan is designed for a family with practicality and safety top of mind. With safety being paramount in a family-friendly vehicle, the Maxima delivers it in spades with the highest crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and best IIHS results. For parents with teenage drivers, the Maxima has monitoring tools including the ability to set speed and boundary restrictions, curfew alerts and the ability to track the vehicle.

Front-seat comfort and space for the driver and passengers is great, though you sacrifice some trunk space for it. The sleek exterior styling also results in less rear-seat passenger headspace than in other large four-door cars.

Lab Results: It offers ample power with its 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We found the Maxima fun to drive and that it offered strong acceleration. It's a large sedan that's stylish and spacious and handles nicely considering its size.

In our assessments, we found the infotainment system to be intuitive, with an 8" touchscreen. Ultimately, you feel like you're getting a sporty and upscale package with a more accessible price point than luxury vehicles.

2022 Nissan Maxima, from $37,440 (base price)

Best Luxury Full-size Sedan

2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

best new family cars 2022
mbusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/30 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: S500, S580
  • Length: 208.2 inches

The full-size S-class sedan is a modern luxury vehicle designed for a family looking for equal parts comfort, high-tech offerings and capable on-road performance. Included standard are luxury features such as heated 12-way power front seats with massage. You definitely won't mind waiting in line for school pickup with those settings! Inside, the cabin is both comfortable and quiet.

Rear-seat passengers will likewise feel the comfort and lavishness of the vehicle, with even more headroom and legroom than the outgoing model and with available heating and massage features with power-adjustable recline. Also available are dual rear screens for entertainment purposes.

Lab Results: The unmistakable exterior aesthetic is modern and lavish, and the S-class’s interior showcases Mercedes-Benz’s refined craftsmanship and attention to detail. And that's not to discount the powerful engine options (429-hp turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder or 496-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter eight-cylinder) serving up impressive acceleration. The ride is relaxed yet stable, and a rear-wheel steering system affords exceptional maneuverability.

The sleek 12.8" OLED touchscreen stands out like a centerpiece, which through the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, offers intuitive control of the vehicle and multimedia content. Updates to the interface mean improved voice recognition and facial and fingerprint recognition options. There's also a 12.3" digital gauge display that can be personalized. It's also loaded with generous standard driver-assistance technology including forward-collision and lane-departure warnings, plus the ability to park itself!

2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, from $111,100 (base price)

Best Subcompact SUV

2022 Mazda CX-30

best new family cars 2022
mazdausa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 24/31/26 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Turbo, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus
  • Length: 173 inches

An excellent small SUV, the CX-30 is designed for a budget-conscious family with a sophisticated design sense looking for a compact, city-friendly vehicle. It received a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was designated an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Notably impressive for the price, the vehicle sported a lot of standard driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. We were also pleased that the 2022 model year brings all-wheel drive as standard.

Lab Results: The base 186-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is perfectly adequate, though our advice is to opt for the 250-hp turbocharged version for more powerful acceleration. Handling is athletic and fluid with crisp steering.

Both the interior and exterior of the vehicle stood out in terms of design and finishes. One of our engineers noted, "The cleverly sculpted exterior gives the vehicle a sense of motion, even when it's still. So cool!" Layer that onto a vehicle that offered agile, yet balanced, handling, and you have a can't-go-wrong selection.

2022 Mazda CX-30, from $22,200 (base price)

Best Luxury Subcompact SUV

2022 BMW X2

best new family cars 2022
bmwusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 24/32 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: sDrive28i, xDrive28i, M35i
  • Length: 172.2 inches

The X2 is a luxury subcompact for a family that principally cares about unique styling and a nimble ride. While it's classified as an SUV, it closely resembles a hatchback with its sloping roofline. The interior isn't top-of-the-line luxury, but it is handsome and outfitted with high-quality materials.

This driver-centric vehicle has easily accessible and responsive controls and a highly adjustable driver’s seat and steering-wheel placement. Thanks in part to its compact nature, the X2 delivers efficient fuel-economy ratings but skimps on rear headroom and cargo space.

Lab Results: The standard 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty strong, and the X2 generally offers agile handling. We found in our test drives that the eight-speed automatic transmission quickly shifted to the optimal gear. One tester noted: "I was impressed with just how fun the X2 was to drive, even on winding country roads."

While it's decidedly fun to drive, we noted a stiff ride, notably over rougher terrain. It is a great all-around vehicle that offers nimble handling and capable powertrains in a beautiful package.

2022 BMWX2, from $36,600 (base price)

Best Compact Crossover/SUV

2022 Mazda CX-5

best new family cars 2022
mazdausa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 24/30/26 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo Signature
  • Length: 180.1 inches

A frequent GH winner, the compact CX-5 compact crossover is a mainstream vehicle that stands out from the crowd with its elegant exterior and well-appointed interior, suitable for a young professional couple or small family. It is an elegant vehicle that offers composed handling and adeptly handles bumps in the road.

The Mazda offers good looks and a good driving demeanor at an affordable sticker price. That said, due to its compact nature the rear-seat space is tight and cargo room isn’t as generous as other crossovers. The high-quality cabin and comfortable seating help compensate.

Lab Results: The CX-5 comes standard with a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or you can choose the more powerful turbocharged engine. Regardless, the CX-5 offers balanced handling and good fuel economy. That said, the Car and Driver pros found the new Turbo trim provides greater acceleration that better complements the CX-5’s sporty handling.

Updates to the refreshed 2022 model include a retuned transmission, suspension improvements and all-wheel drive now standard on all models. While we've long loved the CX-5, these refinements equate to an even smoother and more responsive driving experience. “The CX-5 channels Mazda’s iconic Miata sports car with crisp handling that no other compact crossover can match, making it ideal for driving enthusiasts with a family,” explains Dorian.

2022 Mazda CX-5, from $25,900(base price)

Best Luxury Compact Crossover

2022 Volvo XC60

best new family cars 2022
volvocars
  • Miles Per Gallon: 26/23/30 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge, Recharge R-Design, Recharge Inscription, Recharge Polestar Engineered
  • Length: 185.4 inches

The XC60 is a crossover aimed at hauling a family around in comfort and style. The XC lineup from Volvo basically means there is something for everyone, and this best-seller offers a compromise between the ultra-compact nature of XC40 and the spaciousness of the XC90. Within the XC60 family, there are three different powertrains offered, including a plug-in hybrid (for the Recharge and Polestar models): The B5 is the base, with a turbocharged 247-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; the upgraded B6 adds a supercharger, bumping horsepower to 295; and then the T8 plug-in ups it even higher.

The 2022 model has a restyled exterior. The changes are subtle but include an updated grille and front bumper. The XC60 offers fuel efficiency across all powertrains, with agile handling and a smooth ride. The elegant interior offers a quiet and comfy experience for the driver and all passengers and doesn't skimp on cargo space either. Loads of driver assistance tech is standard, including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.

Lab Results: Our creative team was notably impressed by the bold styling of the exterior, including the unique headlights and taillights. Besides great vehicle dynamics and refined craftsmanship, the infotainment system is a standout. You'll find front and center a large 9" vertical screen featuring a newly updated Google-based interface.

Those immersed in the Google Assistant ecosystem will find comfort with Google built in, standard on the 2022-model-year XC60. Even those new to this personal assistant will rejoice in the responsiveness from Google with chatting, making it easier to activate media, adjust the temperature controls, call a friend, start a playlist or initiate a destination in Google Maps, all hands-free. "Hey Google, where have you been hiding?!"

2022 Volvo XC60, from $42,650 (base price)

Best Mid-size SUV

2022 Ford Bronco

best new family cars 2022
ford
  • Miles Per Gallon: not yet available
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, Everglades
  • Length: 172.7 inches

The 2022 two-row Ford Bronco keeps its appeal and off-roading capabilities, making it a rugged SUV suitable not only for family adventures but everyday excursions as well. Building on the nostalgic charm of the original Bronco from over five decades earlier, both the interior and exterior design, as well as its impressive all-terrain capabilities, are reminiscent of the OG version.

A 300-hp turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder is standard and a 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine is optional, but both powertrains provide sufficient power and a responsive driving experience. An independent front suspension and precise steering provide the driver with confidence. While none of the Bronco’s models deliver particularly notable fuel efficiency, driver and passenger will enjoy a comfortable, albeit noisy, ride. Most driver-assistance features aren't included in the base package but are available with upgrades.

Lab Results: For family-minded practicality, we'd opt for the four-door hardtop variant, though you can also get two-door and soft-top versions. It adds a third middle seat in the back row, as well as more cargo space. The roof is removable, making it particularly fun for adventurers.

Even with the nostalgic vibe, the infotainment system is plenty modern, featuring Ford's Sync 4 software. It's simple and intuitive and easily integrates with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Best Luxury Mid-size SUV

2022 Genesis GV80

best new family cars 2022
genesis
  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/25/23 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: up to 7 seats
  • Available Trims: 2.5T, 3.5T, 3.5T Advanced +
  • Length: 184.4 inches

Fully loaded and quite elegant, this two-row SUV is well suited for design-forward, yet comfort-seeking, families. While Genesis is still a young brand, it continues to impress the Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver teams thanks to its audacious, progressive and convenient spin on aesthetically pleasing vehicles. There are so many standard convenience features, it's impossible to list them all. Genius tech includes adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance and lane-keeping assist.

There's an optional third row that allows the GV80 to seat up to seven, but it's not the roomiest and is suitable only for young kids. Choose captain's chairs or bench seating for the second row.

Lab Results: In test drives, GH analysts were beyond impressed with this Genesis model's smooth, quiet ride — not to mention its surprising value and well-crafted interior. "It's the most comfortable thing I've driven all year!" gushed one tester.

Testers found this luxury SUV comfortable to drive, and it has an impressive warranty. One noted that she loved the unique camera for right turns, the slim and intuitive 14.5" touchscreen and the power liftgate.

Best Full-Size SUV

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

best new family cars 2022
jeep
  • Miles Per Gallon: 19/26/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve
  • Length: 189.8 inches

This well-known, long-running nameplate is best for a family that likes to adventure. New convenience and tech features have been added, including optional front and rear interactive displays.

Opt for the V-8 engine: Though it's a bit of a gas guzzler, it provides more power and refinement than the V-6 engine.

Lab Results: This rugged yet refined ride truly delights. "This Jeep is a practical family car that's anything but boring," said one tester. Our engineers were impressed by the three-row L model, which debuted for the 2021 model year and is the first Grand Cherokee that can seat up to seven.

We found the vehicle comfy and spacious for the driver as well as the front and back-seat passengers. And while you'll likely spend more time driving on suburban roads than off-roading, it's nice to know it's an adept off-road vehicle.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, from $38,325 (base price)

Best Luxury Full-Size SUV

2022 BMW X7

best new family cars 2022
bmwusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 19/24 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: Up to 7 seats
  • Available Trims: xDrive40i, M50i, Alpina XB7
  • Length: 203.3 inches

The largest available BMW delivers what you've come to expect from a BMW in the grandest form, designed for affluent families with multiple kids looking to make a statement. In the BMW lineup, this three-row provides the most seating, the most cargo room and the most generous interior dimensions for a BMW vehicle. And BMW doesn't sacrifice on quality, comfort and general refinement — even the third row is richly appointed with a sunroof, climate control, heated seats, USB-C chargers and more. Read: Kids don't have to fight over second- vs. third-row amenities!

The base 335-hp, turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty strong, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp, 4.4-liter eight-cylinder and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. And a host of standard features are included like collision warning and mitigation, as well as lane-departure warning.

Lab Results: In our tests we found it easy to put car seats in, both through the door and then into the easily accessible LATCH anchors. The multimedia offerings impressed us in terms of practicality, with a fully digital gauge cluster and large 12.3" central touchscreen display with an added rotary knob for convenience. Our biggest complaints are the limited third-row passenger space (still fine for kids) and limited cargo space behind the third row.

The base 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty powerful, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp4.4-liter V-8 and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. While not as sporty as its sedan counterparts, there was still a level of agility to the X7 that was impressive for its size, and it offers an overall smooth ride. Regardless of the powertrain, the X7 packs in an ultra-quiet, ultra-luxe, feature-laden cabin.

2022 BMW X7, from $74,900 (base price)

Best Large SUV

2022 GMC Yukon AT4

best new family cars 2022
gmc
  • Miles Per Gallon: 14/19 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: up to 8 seats
  • Available Trims: N/A
  • Length: 210.0 inches

This large SUV is designed for a big family looking to haul all its people and their goods in a rugged, yet handsome package. The AT4, with a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 base or more powerful 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 option available, offers a smooth ride experience thanks to its fully independent suspension, 20" all-terrain tires and higher ground clearance. It offers quick acceleration and impressive braking, especially for its size.

If spaciousness is paramount, this vehicle delivers, though you'll certainly sacrifice fuel economy to accomplish this. While we love the AT4 for its ruggedness and capable off-roading qualities, the Denali variant offers more luxury.

Lab Results: While we're specifically calling out the AT4 for its family-friendly toughness, the Yukon nameplate has a variety of engine options, all delivering a refined drive. There's no questioning why it's GMC's best-selling full-size SUV. No matter where you sit you'll be exceptionally pleased. One tester noted: "I'm shocked by how comfortable I am in the third row!"

Last year the Yukon was treated to a full redesign, and the updates for the 2022 model year continue to improve an already great vehicle. Among them is an overhauled Google-based infotainment system and 12" digital gauge cluster, both serious improvements to the multimedia experience. Also noteworthy is that on the AT4 the 15" head-up display is included, which we found helpful for keeping eyes on the road while still being able to gather key information.

Best Luxury Large SUV

2022 Lincoln Navigator

best new family cars 2022
lincoln
  • Miles Per Gallon: 17/23 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: Up to 8 seats
  • Available Trims: Standard, Reserve, Reserve L, Black Label, Black Label L
  • Length: 210.0-221.9 inches (L in trim = longbase models)

The large luxury Lincoln Navigator SUV delivers an equally luxe interior as its exterior, designed for a cosmopolitan family seeking curb appeal. Its luxurious and spacious interior includes appointments such as leather upholstery, wood details, heated and cooled seats (with optional massagers!) for second-row passengers and ample seating (and USB ports!) even for third-row inhabitants. On the flip side, like with others in this class, the large size means maneuverability isn't as great, and the same for fuel efficiency.

Numerous enhancements outfit the 2022 model year, both on the exterior and interior. While the exterior updates are less notable, the interior updates significantly aid functionality. The upgraded Sync 4 infotainment software, accessible through a larger 13.2" display, provides an improved multimedia experience. ActiveGlide, Lincoln's hands-free semi-autonomous driving system, is now available, as are plenty of other standard and optional driver-safety technology.

Lab Results: The 440-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine with its smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission delivers a punch, so we don't mind that it's the only powertrain available. It's also notably quick, belying its size.

The Navigator is opulent yet tasteful, and given its enormous size it appears almost expertly tailored. While we're fans of much of the upgrades, our favorite addition for the 2022 model is the available Amazon Fire rear-seat entertainment system, where one passenger can stream The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel while the other basks in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.

ford
  • Range: up to 315 miles EPA-estimated range
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Select, California Route 1, Premium, GT
  • Length: 185.6 inches

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an ideal vehicle for a family looking for an accessible, full-featured crossover, with the bonus of it being a practical all-electric. The sleek exterior is matched with an equally handsome interior. We were fans of the large 15.5" center touchscreen, which features Ford’s next-gen SYNC 4A infotainment system and is super easy to use.

Much of the driver-assistance tech is available but not included standard. You may want to splurge for upgrades, as this car is eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Lab Results: This zippy all-electric Ford SUV has zero tailpipe emissions — and it's a dream to drive. "Just be ready to turn heads when you're sitting behind the wheel," said one tester. "I got a thumbs-up from other drivers more times than I have fingers."

This athletic SUV offers impressive acceleration and handling, and drivers can take comfort in its lengthy range of up to 315 miles, per EPA estimate (dependent on battery). In our road tests, we found it to be responsive and agile with sporty handling.

Best Hybrid

2022 Honda Insight

Honda
  • Miles Per Gallon: 55/49 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: EX and Touring
  • Length: 183.6 inches

The 2022 Honda Insight delivers a modestly priced hybrid for those looking for a well-rounded, fuel-efficient vehicle. Even though the Insight is affordable, the interior doesn't feel dingy, and it offers a smooth ride. Honda Sensing, the brand's advanced driver-assist technology, is included standard with features like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Our biggest quibble is the noisy engine, but for the price, we're willing to overlook that and just crank up the music.

Lab Results: We appreciate that the battery is under the rear seats, so the trunk is able to provide generous cargo space without obtrusion. If more space is needed, you can use the 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback to pass through large items.

Given its strong fuel economy, we weren't counting on such an enjoyable driving experience. The Insight’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor combo is quicker than we imagined, and both confident and responsive. In terms of multimedia displays, the Insight's was decidedly intuitive with well-labeled controls and responsive feedback.

Best Minivan

2022 Kia Carnival

kia
  • Miles Per Gallon: 19/26/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: up to 8 seats
  • Available Trims: LX, LXS, EX, SX, SX-Prestige
  • Length: 203.0 inches

It’s an everything hauler! Called a multipurpose vehicle (MPV), this new Kia is basically a cool, modern updated minivan, making it desirable to moms and dads looking for practicality but not willing to sacrifice aesthetic.

Parents and kids alike will enjoy sitting in the second-row captain’s chairs. We love the panoramic sunroof (standard with highest trim) for maximum pleasure.

It’s offered only as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and for now, there is no hybrid model as there is for other minivans.

Lab Results: In test drives, we found it to be comfy and well appointed. It drove smoothly and offered a composed, refined ride for passengers and the driver. In tests, it fit 14 simulated carry-on suitcases with the seats up, and it has up to nine available USB charging ports.

“I’m into the boxier SUV look, but thrilled that it retains minivan benefits like ample cargo and passenger space,” said a tester. Dorian noted: “The Carnival proved its mettle in a recent long-distance road trip, where it proved to be a quiet, comfortable, and high-tech highway cruiser with ample cargo space for a family vacation.”

Best Station Wagon

2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness

subaru
  • Miles Per Gallon: 26/33 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: N/A
  • Length: 191.3 inches

As the name would imply, the Outback Wilderness is a capable off-roading wagon great for an outdoorsy family looking for a stylish-yet-rugged vehicle for its go-anywhere adventures. It builds on the reliable capability of the core Outback line and is loaded with off-road extras like its lifted suspension that provides 9.5” of ground clearance, a more powerful and quick 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and all-terrain tires.

All-wheel drive is standard, which aids in more precise handling and responsiveness regardless of road and weather conditions. The vehicle can tow up to 3,500 pounds and the roof rack can handle up to 220 pounds (700 pounds when stationary, for say, a tent).

Lab Results: We were impressed to find that not only is the exterior extremely rugged, but inside you’ll find water-repellant upholstery. This is great not just for off-grid getaways but also for messy children or pets as it allows for an easy wipe-down.

What we ultimately saw in the Wilderness was an already exceptional vehicle upped to an even higher level. It affords a cushioned ride with strong standard driver-assistance tech including Subaru’s well-regarded EyeSight system.

Best Luxury Wagon

2022 Audi A6 Allroad

audiusa
  • Miles Per Gallon: 21/28/23 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: Premium Plus, Prestige
  • Length: 194.9 inches

The Audi A6 Allroad is a premium mid-size vehicle that stands out for its practical, yet chic, wagon body style, aimed at the luxury market. In general, we’re fans of wagons as they provide much of the safety benefits of SUVs but with a lower center of gravity that usually affords the driver better handling and control. And that’s certainly true here.

There is a lot of standard equipment, including 20” wheels, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate and wireless Apple CarPlay integration; we wish a few other practical driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, were standard as well.

Lab Results: Where the Allroad really shines is with its interior. While the split-screen infotainment system takes some acclimating to, it’s easy to use once you do. The spaciousness and luxury appointments abound. Like other wagons it provides impressive cargo space, holding nine carry-on cases in its 30-cubic-foot cargo area, and 20 with the seats stowed away, according to C/D evaluations.

The Allroad provides punchy acceleration thanks to its powerful 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. Coupled with a plush ride and composed handling, the wagon delivers a well-rounded experience with which it’s hard to find any major fault.

Best Hatchback

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI

best new family cars 2022
vw
  • EPA Fuel Economy: Not yet available
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: S, SE, Autobahn
  • Length: 168.0 inches

The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI is a fun and sporty hatchback designed for driving enthusiasts who also need a practical daily driver. The originator of the sporty hot-hatch segment is back with an updated GTI for 2022 that includes more cargo room, improved vehicle dynamics, an overhauled infotainment system with touch controls, and more robust driver-assistance systems.

Lab Results: The eight-generation Golf GTI simply delights. It offers sharp handling and quick acceleration whether it’s equipped with the six-speed manual or the seven-speed automatic transmission. We found the adaptive cruise control to be effective and reliable and appreciated how responsive and robust the voice commands were. That said, the new capacitive touch controls located on the steering wheel require some acclimation.

Hatchbacks are known for cargo space, and the GTI's is notably impressive. With its sleek design, it's our favorite new entrant in the category.

Best Pickup Truck

2022 Ford Maverick

best new family cars 2022
ford
  • Miles Per Gallon: 37/42/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
  • Seating: 5 seats
  • Available Trims: XL, XLT, Lariat
  • Length: 199.7 inches

The all-new 2022 Ford Maverick is a great compact truck, versatile enough to meet the demands of a busy family in an urban setting. While some may remember that the original Maverick was a compact car back in the 1970s, the new version is a small pickup that feels spacious and solid. The Maverick might be mini by pickup-truck standards, but its capabilities are not: It offers a 1,500-pound payload capacity regardless of engine and towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds for the hybrid or 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

It’s built on the same chassis as the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs, but it sits low, and taller drivers and passengers will have to duck to get in. The Maverick offers a capable and relatively comfortable ride for front-row occupants at a bargain entry price. That said, you'll have to pay up for more robust features, including more convenience and safety tech options.

Lab Results: Like others in the class, this mini-truck offers a firm, controlled ride. While a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain is standard, those looking for more power can opt for the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. No matter the powertrain, you get a great blend of affordability and versatility in this utility vehicle.

Clever storage solutions can be found throughout the Maverick, and the back-seat cushions can flip up to reveal more cubbies. The bed is the prize here, though, larger than other comparable vehicles and cleverly appointed with integrated features such as an adjustable cable for tying things down and cutouts to allow for segmented storage.

How we tested

Since our Best New Family Cars of 2021was announced, we have been busy evaluating all of the new entrants to the market. Driving nearly 10,000 miles over the course of the year on sprawling highways, winding roads and unpredictable city blocks, we're confident that we're serving up great-performing vehicles that will make car time more enjoyable. Among all the test drives, over 150 car seats were installed and uninstalled, iPhones and Android devices were paired with dozens of infotainment systems and all voice-recognition software were assessed.

✔️ Core performance: Ultimately, the vehicles that are featured scored high enough across our checklist of criteria. Like all products vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute, safety and core performance is a baseline. Our performance metrics include ratings of smoothness and reaction time of transmissions under varied loads and through a variety of maneuvers such as intermittent passing or mid-speed turns. We take into account the powertrain, which is every component that helps the vehicle move, including the engine and transmission, as well as the driveshaft, axles and differential. We want responsive transmissions that are able to select the appropriate gear. When it comes to handling and maneuverability, we are looking for vehicles that are particularly nimble. We assess how well a vehicle can absorb bumps and potholes in the road without adding obtrusive noise. We even check the parking and turning radius to ensure it is easy to park the vehicle in a tight space.

✔️ Comfort and convenience: Here, we are looking for vehicles that are easy to get in and out of, cup holders and console controls that are positioned and laid out well and easily within reach for the driver, and comfortable seats for front- and rear-seat passengers. As noted, we install car seats in various positions to see how accessible LATCH anchor points are and overall space requirements and possible configurations for setup. In terms of storage, we look at the size and usability of the rear trunk space, factoring in things like storage nets and cargo-area intrusions. We also evaluate the interior storage layout, considering things like the thoughtfulness of the storage options throughout the car, including overhead bins, center consoles, door pockets, map pockets and more.

✔️ Infotainment and controls: We evaluate the infotainment displays, looking for media displays with clarity that are well sized and oriented in a position that will not distract the driver. We likewise look at the primary displays, looking for fonts that are easy to read at a glance. The layout of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) is also evaluated for its placement, simplicity and isolation from other controls that could otherwise confuse its function. The same goes for the steering-wheel controls used for audio, media, voice and phone commands, cruise control, etc. to ensure they are intuitive, responsive and ergonomic. Finally, exterior controls like those for the windshield wipers, lights, and cruise control are reviewed in terms of their uselessness and responsiveness.

✔️ Car and Driver testing metrics: Car and Driver has track-tested all of these cars, measuring everything from acceleration and braking to road noise and rear-seat comfort. We use their comprehensive test data and extensive on-road and track evaluations to help us arrive at our top new cars, SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks. Chief Brand Officer Eddie Alterman says, "If a carmaker makes it, Car and Driver has tested it. We perform deep dives on more than 400 new cars a year, measuring everything from the size of the engine to the size of the cupholders."

✔️ Practical features: We also take note of added practicality or just pure fun elements a car may offer, because while the latest vehicles on the market are incorporating new safety and tech features, they are also layering in aesthetic and convenience options that are particularly important if you have a family. Think: a convenient hidden spot to store your bag, lots (and lots!) of charging ports for all of your gadgets and extra little details to show off your personal aesthetic.

Car buyer's advice

Regardless of what vehicle you settle on, keep in mind the following tips to help you get started:

  1. Test-drive for a full day. Push the dealer for the longest possible test drive. Many will allow you to keep the vehicle overnight if you ask. This is helpful as it allows you to check out the headlights after dark and to see how the car fits into your garage.
  2. Consider the trim. Powertrains and options may vary, potentially greatly impacting not just the feel but sticker price of your vehicle. Make sure you compare side by side, so there are no surprises after the car is yours.
  3. Sit in each of the seats. See how easy it is to get in and out of the driver's seat, passenger seat, and the second and third row of seats as applicable. Always take the time to install your own car seat or booster seats if you have young kids who need them.
