The Flemish Automobile Association in Belgium (VAB) is impressed by BYD. One year since the BYD ATTO 3 won an award at the ‘VAB Family Car of the Year’ election, the brand has once again emerged as the winner! The BYD DOLPHIN has been named ‘VAB Family Car of the Year 2024’ in the electric car category. According to the jury, the DOLPHIN has “the best price/quality/range offer in the market”.
For the annual VAB Family Car of the Year election, all kinds of recently introduced cars are extensively tested and assessed by a jury of 17 car journalists and car experts, as well as 43 families with children. The participating cars are divided into three categories and assessed on matters such as comfort, infotainment, safety, accessories, practicality, technology and driving characteristics. But affordability and costs per kilometre also play a major role in the final verdict. The cars are tested in the surroundings of the Zolder race circuit in Belgium.
In this year’s contest, 14 models competed in the electric car category. With 57 points, the BYD DOLPHIN achieved the highest score, leaving strong competitors like the MG4 Electric, Smart #1, Hyundai Kona Electric, Volkswagen ID.3 and Toyota bZ4X far behind.
The jury's verdict
“The BYD DOLPHIN is unbeatable when it comes to price/quality/range. The car offers great value for money. Moreover, all jurors praised the compact dimensions of the DOLPHIN, combined with the wealth of interior space for its passengers and great dynamic driving experience. This makes the BYD DOLPHIN the undisputed VAB Family Car of the Year 2024 in the electric category.”

The BYD DOLPHIN is a five-door hatchback with a relatively modest length of 4.29 meters, but thanks to its clever interior layout, it still offers plenty of space for up to five occupants. And it’s a very safe family car too, as recently demonstrated in crash tests conducted by the Euro NCAP safety institute, where the DOLPHIN was awarded with the maximum score of five stars.
In addition, the DOLPHIN is based on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0, with a groundbreaking and unique Blade Battery (cobalt-free, lithium iron phosphate battery) that sets new standards in safety, durability, stability and energy density. Together with its efficient powertrain technology and standard heat pump, the BYD DOLPHIN offers a reassuring range of up to 427 kilometres (WLTP combined).
Despite its advanced technology, high-quality interior and extensive standard equipment, the BYD DOLPHIN is already available for a starting price less than 30,000 euros (may differ per country). This means BYD has an unprecedentedly competitive offering in the electric C-segment. The fact that accessibility and an excellent price-quality ratio are important issues for today’s families, is once again confirmed by the results of the VAB Family Car of the Year 2024 election, one year since the BYD ATTO 3 was voted ‘VAB Family Car of the Year 2023’.
