Franck Ribery undergoes surgery, out for the immediate future

The Frenchman's surgery on Thursday evening will keep him out of the Nürnberg match.

Bayern Munich announced on Friday morning that Franck Ribery underwent a "minor operation" on Thursday evening to repair a burst blood vessel in his buttock. He'll remain in the hospital until Sunday and will be evaluated at that time. The surgery will obviously keep him out of the Nürnberg match on Saturday, and it's not known yet exactly when he'll return to the squad. The club hope that he'll return in time for the first leg of the Champions League match with Arsenal.

Club spokesman Markus Hörwick filled us in to the fact that "Franck suffering from Compartment Syndrome." Now, if you're sitting there and wondering exactly what is Compartment Syndrome, WebMD has you covered.

Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside an enclosed space in the body. Compartment syndrome usually results from bleeding or swelling after an injury. The dangerously high pressure in compartment syndrome impedes the flow of blood to and from the affected tissues. It can be an emergency, requiring surgery to prevent permanent injury.

Pep Guardiola was quoted with your standard coach-speak, "I hope he can train with us again as soon as possible.". While Bayern have already basically wrapped up the Bundesliga title at this point, Ribery's absence will be felt the most in the Champions League. Few players in the world can replicate what the Frenchman can do on the field. However, if any team can cope with the loss of one of the world's best players, it's this Bayern team.
