Delete a Menu Item

This guide will show you how to remove items from your menu and delete a menu entirely.

To determine which section of this guide to follow, visit your dashboard and check under Appearance on the left side. If you see Editor, use the Site Editor section of this guide. Otherwise, use the WP Admin or Customizer instructions.

Remove a Menu Item Using the Site Editor

In the Site Editor, your menu comes from the Navigation block. Follow these steps to delete a menu item:

  1. Visit your dashboard.
  2. Go to Appearance → Editor.
  3. Click on the right side of the screen to open up the editing area.
    • Alternatively, select Patterns and choose the header or other template part containing your menu.
  4. Open List View at the top-left corner of your screen (it’s the icon that looks like three horizontal lines above each other.)
  5. Select the Navigation block, which may be nested inside other blocks like HeaderGroup, and Row.
  6. You can then delete a menu item using one of several different methods:
    • In List View, click the three dots next to the menu item and click Delete.
    • In the menu item’s toolbar, click the three dots next to the menu item and click Delete.
    • In the block settings in the right sidebar, click the three dots next to the menu item and click Remove.
  7. Click Save to save your changes.

Removing a page from your menu will not remove the page from your site. It only removes the link to the page from your menu.

Remove a Menu Item Using WP Admin

On sites with classic themes, you can remove menu items using WP Admin by following these steps:

  1. Visit your dashboard.
  2. Go to Appearance → Menus.
  3. Click on the menu item once to expand the options.
  4. Click Remove:

Remove a Menu Item Using Customize

On sites with classic themes, you can remove menu items using the Customizer by following these steps:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Menus.
  2. Choose your menu.
  3. Click on the menu item to expand the options.
  4. Click Remove:

Click on a menu item to expose the Remove link to delete a specific item.

Removing a page from your menu will not remove the page from your site. It only removes the link to the page from your menu.

Delete a Menu

A deleted menu cannot be recovered. To completely delete a menu and all of its items from your site, follow the steps below. You can create a new menu following these steps.

Site Editor

To delete a menu:

  1. Visit your dashboard and navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  2. Click on Navigation to view all menus created on the site.
  3. Select a menu, then click on the three vertical dots next to the menu name.
  4. Click Delete.

You can also remove the Navigation block from Appearance → Editor. Learn how to remove a block.

WP Admin

  1. Go to Appearance → Menus.
  2. Next to Select a menu to edit, choose the menu from the dropdown and click Select.
  3. Click Delete Menu that appears at the bottom left corner.

Customize

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Menus.
  2. Click on the menu you wish to delete.
  3. Scroll below the menu items and click delete menu.
  4. Click the Save Changes button when you’re done.
