My cousin decided to surprise me with a tour visit to his club, this is how I got the chance to be part of the colonial splendor! Inside the golf court club. Muthaiga Country Club is a famous part of Nairobi’s colonial life and is a reminder of how things were for the old settlers back in the day. Nestled in this haven of tranquility is this family-friendly old colonial-style clubhouse. Situated on “Ambassador Avenue” as the area peppered with embassies,(from the USA embassy residence to that of the Saudi embassy)is fondly called, this quiet and safe area boasts tree-lined avenues and well-guarded streets. The club sits on expansive well-manicured lawns behind well-manned security gates accessed via members’ swipe cards or by guests on a list. Past the clubhouse sits Pinks Restaurant, the more relaxed part of the club, nestled next to the pool and children’s play area. Keen-eyed caregivers and pool attendants look over the children, allowing parents to relax and take in the scenery. An optional set menu or buffet allows for a variety of meal and heath options. It is possible to stay there and the guest rooms are comfortable but basic. The bar is wonderful as are the gardens but there are traditions and rules which must be respected and you will be politely reminded by a member of staff if you infringe on any. Some may find this place stuffy but if you like old-fashioned style and service then this place is highly recommended. It is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise rather depressing city (Nairobi). I found them to be really strict, but guess what! If you can’t beat them join them! some of the rules that apply: Taking pictures is prohibited no phones, no laptops except in designated areas. The “colonialness” of the place evokes “Out of Africa”, but also oppression. Rich history and fabulous library. Service and food are top-notch. Well priced, (Expensive if you are not a member) great variety and a desert choice fit for royalty. Glad I got to experience this venue and consider it a treat. . A great, family-friendly multi-cultural Club that still however remembers its origins proudly.
