Lacrosse Defeats College of St. Benedict; Eight Players Score

Box Score St. Joseph, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team defeated the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) 18-5 Monday night at CSB Athletic Complex. The win moves UWL to 11-4 overall while the College of St. Benedict falls to 8-2.

The Bennies got on the scoreboard first as Shauna Miller scored an unassisted goal in the second minute of the game. The Eagles responded quickly as they scored the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Abigail Steigauf got the scoring going first for the Eagles followed by Grace Willmott, Ava Schiltz and Olivia Gscheidmeier. Miller made it 4-2 with 2:36 left in the first quarter with her second goal of the game for St. Benedict. Lauren Schwartz quickly made it 6-2 with two goals for the Eagles in the final two minutes of the first quarter. 

Schwartz would add her third goal in the first minute of the second period to give the Eagles a 7-2 lead. Less than a minute later, Sami Hackly cut the Eagles lead to 7-3. Oliva Wight became the sixth Eagle to score in the game as she gave the Eagles an 8-3 lead with 9:16 left in the second quarter. After Grace Fitzgibbons scored for the Bennies, the Eagles scored the final three goals of the first half to lead 11-4 at halftime. Lydia Spencer, MacKenzie Crouse and Schwartz each scored for the Eagles. 

The third quarter would see UWL out score St. Benedict 4-0 as they got goals from Willmott, Steigauf, Gscheidmeier and Schwartz. Schwartz also recorded an assist on Gscheidmeier's goal as UWL led 15-4 at the end of the third period. Miller would score her third goal of the game for the Bennies to start the fourth quarter but that would be the final goal for St. Benedict. Schwartz, Willmott and Wight each scored in the fourth quarter for UWL to give the Eagles an 18-5 advantage. 

UWL out shot St. Benedict 45-23 including a 20-9 advantage in the second half. The Eagles finished with eight different players scoring and were led by Schwartz with six goals. Willmott finished with three goals while Steigauf, Gscheidmeier and Wight each scored twice. Abi Furlano played all 60 minutes in goal for the Eagles, finishing with 14 saves. 

Miller led the Bennies with three goals while Fitzgibbons and Hackley each had one. Chloe Lewis suffered the loss in goal for St. Benedict as she finished with 14 saves. 

UWL will return to action on Wednesday, April 26 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a 5 p.m start.
