No. 8/9 Men’s Lacrosse Hangs on to Defeat Utah

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — No. 8/9 Rutgers men's lacrosse battled to an 18-14 victory over Utah on Saturday afternoon at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights recorded their third-straight win and second-straight game with nine different goal scorers.
 
Rutgers was led by Brian Cameron and Dante Kulas, who netted four goals each. The pair is second (17) and third (16) on the team in goals scored this spring.
 
Ross Scott secured his third performance with at least six points (three goals, three assists), adding to his team-leading total 26 points (19 goals, seven assists).
 
Eric Civetti's two goals marked his first multi-goal performance of his career.
 
Shane Knobloch and Joe Neuman were the other Scarlet Knights with multi-point games. Both recorded one point and one assist.
 
Ethan Rall picked up five ground balls and forced three turnovers. The senior now has 71 caused turnovers in his career as he continues to get closer to the all-time record of 84 held by Nick Contino (2011-14).
 
The Scarlet Knights forced their opponent into 21 turnovers, the highest mark for the Utes this season.
 
Rutgers had the edge on faceoffs, winning 19-of-36 attempts. Jonathan Dugenio won 15 of them while also picking up eight ground balls.
 
Joe Neuman had zero career points coming into today's matchup. The senior earned his first two career points in style, recording one goal and one assist on back-to-back faceoffs in less than 30 seconds.
 
Game Summary
Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, before Jack Aimone added RU's first goal of the day at the 5:01 mark. The Utes stayed on top, adding their third goal of the game. Scott tied the game at three with back-to-back goals at the end of the first.
 
Utah netted the first goal of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead. Kulas and Cameron scored for the Scarlet Knights, giving the team its first lead of the game. The Utes knotted the game at five.
 
Midway through the second, RU used a two-goal run to earn the edge. Utah added one more goal before the break to make the score 7-6, Rutgers.
 
The Scarlet Knights came out of the break hot, outscoring the Utes 6-0 in the third quarter. Cameron (2), Knobloch (1), Civetti (1), David Sprock (1), and Nick Teresky (1) netted RU's goals in the quarter.
 
The Utes refused to go away, going on two separate three-goal runs in the last 12 minutes of the contest.
 
Rutgers scored five goals in the fourth to hang on to the victory. Kulas added two goals and Neuman provided a spark with a goal and an assist off of back-to-back faceoffs for RU.
 
RU hung on to its lead, taking the 18-14 victory, despite 21 shot attempts by Utah in the final frame. The Utes outshot RU, 49-45, in the high-scoring contest. The Scarlet Knights denied all three extra-man opportunities by the Utes in the fourth quarter.

  • Rutgers has owned the third quarter this spring, outscoring opponents, 28-8.
  • Brian Cameron tied his career-high with four goals. His 17 goals this spring is second on the team.
  • Ross Scott has at least six points in three of the last four games. The senior leads RU with 26 points this spring.
