Discover The Recipe

In Turkey, flatbread is a staple that is eaten nearly every day. Similar to Indian naan bread, but softer and bit doughier than Greek pita, the Turkish flatbread variety known as 'Bazlama' is the perfect accompaniment for everything from hummus to doner kebab sandwiches. There are many other varieties of flatbread, such as Gözleme, Pide, and Lahmacun, and the differences among them are mainly in texture and the toppings. This Herbed Turkish Bread recipe is simple to make at home on your stovetop and tastes delicious! Try the flatbread sliced in half and stuffed with cheese and fresh herbs and then toasted. Or choose your favorite fillings like minced meat, spiced meatballs, or grilled chicken and greek yogurt.

Seasoned with our Turkish Herb Blend, this Herbed Turkish Flatbread (Bazlama) incorporates classic Turkish herbs like dill, mint, and oregano with a pop of fruity peppery heat from the Aleppo chili flakes and a sweet, nutty finish from the cumin and fennel seed. The resulting Turkish flatbread is sure to excite your tastebuds and will soon become a favorite recipe you'll want to make often.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flour

  • 1 pkg Instant dry yeast

  • 1 tsp sea salt

  • 1-3 tsp Piquant Post Turkish Herb Blend (to taste)

  • 2/3 cup warm oat milk

  • 2/3 cup warm water

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil

Notes

A delicious way to serve this bread is as an accompaniment to our Baharat Spiced Meatballs or our Shish Tawook.

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, salt and Turkish Herb Blend. Add the milk, warm water and olive oil. Mix together until a shaggy dough is formed. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.

Place the dough into a large oiled bowl and allow to rise covered for 1 hour until doubled. Punch down the dough and divide into 6 equal sized pieces and form into balls. Place the balls onto an oiled sheet pan and cover with plastic and allow to rest for 30 minutes.

Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Roll the dough out into 1/4” thick rounds about 6”-7” in diameter. Place one of the dough rounds onto the heated skillet and cook for 2 minutes on the first side until it is lightly browned. Flip the bread and cook on the other side for another couple of minutes. The bread should puff up.

Continue to cook all the bread on both sides. Brush all the bread with olive oil, and season with sea salt and chili flakes and more Turkish Herb Blend. Serve warm!
