Canada Post recently adorned their stamps with a portrait of Donald Sutherland.

Born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1935, Sutherland originally studied Engineering and drama at the University of Toronto, but eventually moved to England to pursue acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

After doing stage and television work, his first film debut was in 1963's The World Ten Times Over, where he played Tall Man in Nightclub.

In 1967, he played Vernon Pinkly in the World War II classic The Dirty Dozen.

It wasnt until 1970 that he got his first lead role in a major motion picture, where he starred as surgeon Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce in the dark comedy M*A*S*H.

His role in M*A*S*H garnered him enough acclaim to, not only be recognized as an A-lister but also earned him his first of nine Golden Globe nominations.

From there, Sutherland became highly sought after, starring in nearly 200 films and television programs throughout his career, including Kelly's Heroes, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Animal House, The Italian Job, and the Hunger Games franchise.

Throughout his career, Sutherland won numerous awards, including a Genie, an Emmy, two Golden Globes, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, and an Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Even with his international success, Sutherland remained Canadian at heart.

Not only is he the father of actor Kiefer Sutherland, but he was married to the daughter of Tommy Douglas, the father of Canadian Medicare.

The Sutherland stamp is inspired by movie posters and shows a side profile of the actor, with several of his movie titles in English and French.

A booklet of 10 domestic Sutherland stamps costs $9.20.
