I’ve been seeing a LOT of Shaker-style peg rails popping up lately - have you noticed that too? I absolutely love their simplicity and ability to add organization to a space by getting things up off the floor and hung in an orderly fashion. The Shakers certainly knew how to keep a home orderly and I think we could learn a lot from their ways!

This style of peg rail seems to making a big comeback right now and I’m here for them. I’ve been saving photos of spaces that use them on Instagram and Pinterest, and I figured I’d share a few examples here of ones that I love that show you some good spots to use them. I’ve also rounded up a few sources to purchase them if you’re in the market!

  • shelf/no shelf

  • line a wall or a short run

  • places: mud room, laundry room, kitchen, bedroom

  • particularly like the tone-on-tone look

Where should you use Shaker peg rails?

There are a few natural spots for a row of hooks like this - mud rooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms immediately come to mind for me. Some less obvious ones I’ve seen are along a wall in a bathroom and even above the countertop in a kitchen.

These hooks are awesome for keeping your home organized in an easy and practical way. You’ll see examples of all of these spaces in the post, so keep on scrolling for inspiration! This is also a perfect DIY project - you can either hang a pre-made peg rail or create your own that’s custom to your space using a piece of wood and a set of loose pegs.

More pegs = more versatility

I think what makes these peg rails distinct from other wall hooks is that they tend to run the length of a wall. You might be saying to yourself, “Why so many?” and to that I’d say, it’s all about versatility! If you have a whole row of hooks, it allows for flexibility on what can be hung there. If you have a larger item that takes up more space, no problem, just shift other items farther down the wall. If you need to hang a bunch of narrow items, great! You’ve got the hooks to do it. No need to worry about a lack of hook space. It’s all about optionality.

Painting Shaker peg rails

While you can certainly stain or clear coat your peg rail to leave it a natural wood tone, I’m a big fan of painting them. I think it makes for a beautiful, subtle statement! If you look through the different inspiration photos you’ll see that a lot of the peg rails are painted to match the trim or wainscoting. It allows them to blend in seamlessly while adding some visual interest to a wall.

Shelf vs. no shelf

Finally, one little nuance to Shaker peg rails is that you’ll either see them with a simple, shallow shelf above them or without. When you’re choosing whether to include a shelf or not, think about what purpose it can serve for that space and whether you like the look of the additional shelf detail.

A shelf can be a great spot to add a little bit of decor like art and/or a plant, and it can also serve as a practical storage spot for pretty items that you want to be within arm’s reach like a pitcher or crock in a kitchen. Some spots might not need a shelf though, and it might just be one more area to dust when you’re cleaning!
