Women’s Lacrosse Falls 13-7 to No. 2 Maryland

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team falls to 2-8 after dropping a Wednesday evening contest 13-7 to No. 2 Maryland (8-1, B10 1-0) on Cooper Field. 

ON THE RECORD 
"I thought we competed for all 60 minutes today. We played against a really talented Maryland team and showed some heart. We have to clean up a few of our discipline areas but I am really excited about how we are heading into BIG EAST conference play," - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the game. 

How It Happened
  • Maryland started off with an early lead, scoring two goals in the opening two minutes of the contest. The Hoyas responded with two goals of their own from Tessa Brooks and Rileigh Meyer to tie the game 2-2. Maryland scored two-consecutive goals in under a minute to reclaim its lead 4-2. At the four minute mark, Tatum Geist found the back of the net to bring the Hoyas within one. The Terps closed out the first quarter with a final goal with one second remaining to lead 5-3. 
  • Maryland kicked off the second quarter with a goal from Hannah Leubecker at the 12:16 mark. After a scoreless five minutes, Gracie Driggs netted her first goal of the evening to bring the Hoyas within two 6-4. At the 3:59 mark, Leubecker scored to put the Terps up 7-4 at halftime. 
  • Brooks opened the third quarter with an assisted goal at the 12:10 mark. Maryland responded with a six-goal scoring run to extend its lead 13-5. 
  • The Blue & Gray netted two goals in the fourth quarter and held the Terps scoreless for a final score of 13-7. 
Of Note
  • Brooks and Geist lead the Hoyas with two goals each while Driggs, Maley Starr and Rileigh Meyer tallied one a piece. 
  • Lily Athans tallied a team-best two draw controls and two caused turnovers. 
  • In net, Leah Warehime made 11 saves in the contest. 
  • The Hoyas held the Terps scoreless in the fourth quarter and only allowed two shots on net. 
Up Next 
The Hoyas will hit the road this weekend to face Villanova in GU's BIG EAST opener on Saturday, March 23. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
