The strigil was indispensable equipment for the ancient athlete. It helped him remove the dust, sweat and oil (with which he usually anointed his body) after training or participating in the games. Strigils were made of metal, usually bronze but sometimes iron, too. Sometimes they had the name of the producing workshop inscribed on the handle. There are, also, some clay examples which must have been used as votive offerings. Strigils were extensively used in athletics from the early 6th c. BC until the late Roman period.
