There are many reasons why the tourists flock to Tasmania's Freycinet National Park, but undoubtedly near the top of many of their lists is the chance to see - and swim at - the gorgeous Wineglass Bay. Always in the 'most beautiful beach in the world' conversation, Wineglass Bay is a mecca for hikers and swimmers visiting Eastern Tasmania.
Description
Located about three hours from Hobart, the trailhead for the hike up to the Wineglass Bay Lookout Track is located at the Freycinet Lodge car park. From there, hikers tackle a steep climb up towards the more forested trail. Passing between Mount Mayson and Mount Amos, the track climbs up to the iconic Wineglass Bay lookout - just over a kilometre from the trailhead.
From there, hikers have two choices: turn around and go back to the car, or keep on going and enjoy the beach. Of course, most choose the latter. A well-marked, well-trodden path takes walkers down to Wineglass Bay itself.
There are areas to camp near the beach, and there are plenty more trails leading off from the white sands, including a worthwhile detour along the Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach.
Just under 7km / 2-3 hours out-and-back, Wineglass Bay does attract the crowds during busy seasons, but it's easy to see why.
