Description

FOAMING INSECT REPELLENT COMPOSITIONS
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention
The present invention generally relates to compositions having one or more insect repellents. More specifically, the present invention relates to foaming insect repellent compositions.
2. Background of the Prior Art
Conventional insect repellent compositions are sold in the form of creams and/or lotions, as well as sprayable liquids that may be dispensed from aerosol or pump-spray containers. Conventional insect repellent compositions are generally convenient to apply, but suffer from several drawbacks.
First, a consumer may have concerns about an insect repellent composition that is sprayed onto the skin, as the composition may be carried into the air and inadvertently inhaled. Additionally, insect repellent compounds can dissolve plastics, breakdown and/or discolor synthetic fibers, and distort painted and/or varnished surfaces. Accordingly, care must be used when applying insect repellent compositions to minimize over-spray or over-flow of the insect repellent composition onto clothing, upholstery and furniture. Obviously, such a level of care may be difficult to achieve, especially using a spray.
Furthermore, traditional oil-in-water emulsions, such as creams and lotions, can leave a heavy, oily residue on the skin that is disliked by consumers. However, it is difficult to minimize oils and waxes, which are necessary for convenient and controllable application of the insect repellent composition.
In light of the foregoing, there is a need for a composition having an effective amount of one or more insect repellents that is convenient, easy to apply and that provides targeted application of the insect repellent.
However, foaming compositions have been hitherto difficult to formulate for various reasons. High levels of hydrophobic ingredients, such as fats and oils, typically used in insect repellent compositions diminish the capacity of such insect repellent compositions to form a foam. It has been surprisingly discovered that an effective insect repellent composition can be formulated that is capable of forming a fast-breaking foam for convenient, easy, targeted application.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a foaming insect repellent composition. It is another object of the present invention to provide such a composition that provides for convenient, easy, targeted application of the insect repellent.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide such a composition that is aesthetically acceptable.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide such a composition that applies a continuous film onto the skin of the user.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention are achieved by a foaming insect repellent composition. The insect repellent compositions of the present invention include an insect repellent and a foamable base that has a foaming agent and a vehicle.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
A composition according to the present invention is a foaming insect repellent composition. The foaming insect repellent composition of the present invention includes at least one insect repellent or active and a foamable base. The foamable base includes a foaming agent and a vehicle. The foaming insect repellent composition of the present invention provides targeted application of the insect repellent active to the skin. This targeted application results in a more uniform and even coverage of the insect repellent active over the skin to which it is applied as compared to, for example, a spray. The insect repellent composition may have one or more suitable insect repellent actives. Examples of such insect repellent active include, but are not limited to: N,N diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (IR3535), oil of citronella, soybean oil, pyrethrum and derivatives thereof, p-menthane-3,8-diol, hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine carboxylate, piperonyl butoxide, lemongrass or other essential oils, ethyl hexanediol, camphor and derivatives thereof, di N- propyl isocinchomeronate, and mixtures of any of the foregoing. Other useful actives are disclosed in U.S. Patent Nos. 5,130,136 and 5,698,209, which are incorporated herein by reference. The preferred insect repellents are DEET, IR3535, oil of citronella, hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine carboxylate, p-menthane-3,8-diol and combinations thereof. The insect repellent active may be present in an amount from about 0.1 percentage by weight (wt%) to about 70 wt%, more preferably about 0.5 wt% to about 50 wt%, based on the total weight of the composition.
All weight percentages disclosed herein are based upon total weight of the composition unless otherwise stated.
The foamable base according to the present invention may be any suitable, foamable formulation, such as a gel, solution or an emulsion. The foamable base is preferably present in an amount about 30 wt% to about 99.9 wt%, more preferably about 70 wt% to about 99 wt%. Most preferably, the foamable base is about 80 wt% to about 95 wt%. The foamable base includes a foaming agent. The foaming agent is preferably a foamable surfactant, a propellant, or a combination thereof. The foaming agent will be described below in a first and a second preferred embodiment of the present invention. In the first preferred embodiment of the present invention, the foaming agent includes a foamable surfactant. Preferably, the foamable surfactant is a phosphate compound, such as an alkyl phosphate salt. Other preferred foamable surfactants include sulfates, sarcosinates, betaines, alkyl polyglucoses, alkyl acid salts, polysorbates, alkanolamides, quaternary salt compounds, silicone surfactants, soaps, and isothionates. The foamable surfactant is preferably present in an amount about 0.1 wt% to about 30 wt%. More preferably, the foamable surfactant is present in an amount about 0.5 wt% to about 15 wt%.
The insect repellent composition is preferably packaged in a container that enhances the capability of the insect repellent composition to form a foam, preferably a fast-breaking foam. When the foaming agent is the foamable surfactant, it is preferred that the insect repellent composition is dispensed through a high-pressure, non-aerosol, fine-mesh pump. Such a pump provides a soft foam mousse for application of the insect repellent to the skin. Such non-aerosol pump obviously excludes the presence of any effective amount of propellant. Preferred examples of such high- pressure, non-aerosol, fine mesh pumps are F2 Foamer (available from Dawa and Airspray) and YF9413 Foamer pump (available from Yoshino). The aperture size of the mesh may be modified according to the knowledge of those skilled in the art to accommodate the insect repellent composition according to its properties, such as viscosity. Accordingly, the insect repellent composition may initially be a solution, emulsion or a gel as long as the molecular weight/stereochemistry of each ingredient allows the ingredient to pass through the apertures of the fine mesh.
In the second preferred embodiment of the present invention, the foaming agent includes a propellant. Propellants useful in a composition according to the present invention include, but are not limited to, isobutane, butane, propane, isopropane, dimethyl ether, hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's), chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's), and combinations thereof.
Preferably, the insect repellent composition includes less than about 30 wt% of the propellant. More preferably, when the insecte repellent is present, the insect repellent composition includes about 6 wt% to about 10 wt% of the propellant. In addition, when the foaming agent includes the propellant, it is preferred that the insect repellent composition is packaged and dispensed from an aerosol container.
The foamable surfactant may also be included in the composition dispensed from such aerosol container. [This just hangs here] The base may also include additional ingredients that are limited only by aesthetic and/or functional considerations. For example, the base may include one or more: fatty alcohols, antioxidants, botanical extracts, buffers, chelating agents, colorants, emollients, emulsifiers, fragrances, humectants, polymers, polyols, preservatives, thickeners, vitamins, film formers, antibacterial agents, skin protectants, water, waxes and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
Notably, the base preferably includes a film former to improve the even coverage of the insect repellent. The film former is preferably present in an amount about 0.1 wt% to about 10 wt%. Examples of film formers include, but are not limited to, C 1-5 alkyl galactomannan, isododecane/ethylene mixed copolymer, adipic acid diethylene glycol/glycerin crosspolymer, trimethylpentanediol/adipic acid copolymer, trimethylpentanediol/adipic acid/isononanoic acid, pvp/hexadecene copolymer, PVP/eicosene copolymer.alpha olefin/isopropyl maleate/MA polymer, cycloalkyl methacrylate copolymer/isododecane trimethyl polysiloxane, octadecene/MA copolymer, PPG- 12/SMDI copolymer, acrylates C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose, dimethiconol, dimethicone, diglycol/cyclohexane- dimethanol/isophthalate/ sulfoisophthalate copolymer, acrylate octylacrylamide copolymer, polyurethane, polyethylene, and beeswax (natural and/or synthetic), and natural gums.
Preferably, the composition also includes a sunscreen. The sunscreen is preferably present in an amount about 1 wt% to about 30 wt%. More preferably, the sunscreen is present in an amount about 2 wt%
to about 20 wt%. In a preferred embodiment, the foaming insect repellent composition of the present invention has a base that includes an insect repellent active, a foamable base, a film former and a sunscreen.

Propane 5.0 A primary benefit of the foaming composition of the present invention is improved targeted application of the insect repellent active on the skin. This desired attribute provides more uniform and even coverage of the insect repellent active over the skin to which it is applied, compared to non-foaming compositions, such as sprays. The foaming characteristics of the present compositions make them more consumer-friendly, and especially more child-friendly. Additionally, the foaming compositions of the present invention provide cosmetically acceptable aesthetics.
Another surprising benefit of the compositions of the present invention is that uniformity of high concentrations of the insect repellent active in the end use foaming composition is not an issue because the composition is homogenized when dispensed/propelled from its container for application.
The present invention having been described with particular reference to the preferred forms thereof, it will be obvious that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
