Abstract

An apparatus and method for determining the location of a mobile unit (10) using signals (220) from satellites of a constellation such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), in conjunction with a location calculation center (200) that exploits a Geographic Information System, to simulate likely signal reception, including signal strength and delayed, reflected signals (220). The method also employs signals from a cellular communications system (210), wherewith the mobile receiver (10) is also associated, to supplement GPS satellite data (220) and to communicate with the location calculation center (200). By comparing actual reception with the simulated model, the method improves an approximate location fix of the mobile unit (10).
