Description

Letters Patent No. 97,511, dated December 7,1869'.
IMPROVED CLOTHESIDRIER AND `S'IllCVE-PIPIE! SHELF.,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Fatent and making part of the same.
To all whom Iit may concern.- Be it known that I, G. E. HoYfr, of Hebron, in the county of Grafton, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Driel-s; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', and to the letters of reference marked thereon. p
'lhis invention relates to an improved clothes-drier, which is intended especially `for use in connection with a stove-pipe. It isso constructed, however, that by the attachment of certain devices, it may be inde-` pendently used, ii desired.
Its novelty consists-v First, in the special construction ofthe supportingring which encircles the pipe, whereby it is made adjustable in size, and isrendered capable of receiving either rods for holding clothing,"or a frame' for supporting plates, Src., or both, as may be desired; and
Second, irnthe construction of the devices for making thesnpporting-ring capableof use independent of the stove-pipe, consisting of a tripod of ordinary construction, and a centre-piece having radial arms, by which-the supporting-ring is held.
The details of construction and manner of'operation will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents an invertedplan view of my invention; p
Figure 2 represent a side elevation of the `ring A; 'and Figures 3 and 4, perspective views of parts detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my' invention, I'will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A' represents the supporting-ring, which is constructed with the base a and iange ai. This base and flange' maybe solid, if desired, (with the excep tions hereinafter lnentioned,) or .they may be constructed with ornamental openings, if preferred.
The ring thus formed oi' the base and flange, is in two parts, which parts are hinged together at a", and united, when in place, at a, by means of a screw of any suitable construction.
In order that the ring may be used upon differentsizes of stove-pipe, I provide lit with the clamps' B, which are constructed with the slotted i'ootLpiece l), curving upright 11.1, and projection b2. These are held in place upon the base a by means ofscrewsba, which pass through the slot in the foot-piece.
By loosening the holding-screws b3, the clasps may be moved forward or back, as may be necessary. v `The flange c,`of the supporting-ring, is rovided at regular and suitable intervals upon its ase-line with square openings, as shown, into which is inserted, when desired, one ,end yof the rods C. i
These rods, thus inserted, are intended for holding towels andother similar articles over and about the stove, for the purpose of drying them.
D represents a frame, constructed in two parts,
which are hinged together, as show'u atd d.
,- The larger of these two parts 'is constructed with one of its edges in a halt` circle, which fits acern'ately the outer circumference of the ring A.
i It has also the arms d d', which are so arranged as to correspomlwith two of the openingsin the ring A.
. When it is desired to use the frame for holding plates,
Ste., these arms are thrust into ythe openings at the rcentre of either half of the ring, thev projecting ends of the-frame being caught under the projections a, upon the outside of the flange al, as shown in the drawings. In this position it is rmly held wit-hout other fastening.
To enable these devices -to he used without connect-ing them to a stove-pipe, I provide a centre-piece, E, which is constructed with the socket e, bearingiiange el, and radial arms e?. These arms are provided upon their upper side with a notch, e3, in which rests, when in position, theinner edge of the ring et.
F represents a tripod, of ordinary construction, by means of which the piece E is held.
To insert the piece E in place, the ring A is slightly opened.
` From this description, the operation will be easily understood. l i
The ring A, when used in connection with a stove- .pipe, is adjusted to suit'the size, and is then fastened in place by means of the screw which unites the two parts.
The rods C are used entirely about the ring, if desired, or in connection with the frame D.
When used independently, the centre-piece is inserted and the tripod used. The device then may be moved from place to place at will. Y
Havingthus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The ring A, in combination with the centre-piece E, as and for the purpose described.
2. The speciiic device described, consisting of the ring A, clamps B, rods C, and frame D, whenused in connection' with a stove-pipe, as and for the purpose set forth. .I
3. The specific device described, consisting of the ring A, clamps B, rods G, frame I), and centre-piece E, when used in connection with a supporting-stand, as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 5th day of Angust,1869.
G. E. HOYT.
