Description

JARVIS T. MUDGE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,285, dated August 31, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JARvIs T. MUDGE, of the city of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in IVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which,
Figure l is an elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 a sectional view exhibiting the flap rubber retracted by the dasher. Fig. 3 a section exhibiting the presser. Fig. I a front view of the dasher and presser.
The nature of my improvement in washing machines consists in constructing an apparatus which not only effectually Washes the clothes by turning them over in the tub, by a hinged slap rubbing board, but from the dasher being placed on wheels, more perfect work is done with less labor; and from the addition of a hinged presser the clothes may be pressed in the tub clear of the suds by mechanical means, without the necessity of handling, either in the hot suds in washing, or the caustic effect of an alkaline lye on the skin when used for the removal of dirt in coarser clothes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, of which A, in the several figures represents the tub; B, the dasher; C a hinged presser connected with the dasher; D a movable table, to the underside of which is connected the dasher and on the upper side the hinged presser, on two edges of the table are racks e for pressing; E the hinged slap rubbing board, working on pivots a; F an apron rubbing board moving on pivots at o, and may be thrown forward as in Fig. 3 to prevent the splash; G a comb on the edge of E; H a counter spring acting on E by the cord inserted in the flap; I an arm secured to the table I), provided at its end with a pin cl, which being passed over the arched end of Gr, lays hold on the back thereof and draws it forward to a vertical position as seen in Fig. 2, by this means the rubber throws the clothes over with each action of the dasher. J, a pawl acting on the rack e, K the lever used in pressing, and bringing J into play,
forth of the dasher, which moves readily on 4 the rollers m, the arm I with its peg lays hold on the comb G and draws the hinged flap rubbing board E forward, carrying with the board the clothes, and by a quick motion they are thrown forward and turned, the peg rising on the rounded side of the comb releases it, and the board E is drawn back to the end of the tub by the spring H, thus placing the clothes between the dasher and E; a repetition of the strokes of the dasher is given, until the clothes are washed, having been well turned in the operation, an advantage this machine has over others, as well as being free from the destructive effects on the clothes in rubbing, or injury to the hands from hot suds or caustic lye. The presser is now thrown down as in Fig. 3 the plug withdrawn fro-m the tub, and the foul suds are pressed fromthe clothes, a rinse water is thrown in, a few further actions of the dasher and presser delivers the clothes ready for the line, without the use of the hands in the tub other than to remove the clothes therefrom, thus avoiding, the injury done delicate fabrics in the act of wringing.
Having described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
- The providing a washing machine with a hinged flap rubbing board E, or its equivalent, for turning the clothes in the tub, in combination with the dasher B and hinged presser C, for the purposes set forth and shown in this specification and accompanying drawings.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
